About The Campaign

In 2016, The Woven Foundation launched one of its longest-standing social change campaigns, The Exceptionals. Back then, employers were reluctant to be open to employing people with criminal convictions – 75% of employers surveyed by Working Links stated that they would discriminate against a candidate with a criminal conviction, with a further 10% declaring that they would never hire from this talent pool.

After a significant period of research, The Woven Foundation discovered a gap between the brilliant work of rehabilitation organisations who prepare and train people in prison for the working world, and businesses with open vacancies. The Exceptionals was created to bridge this gap, opening doors for employers to hire people with convictions and advocating for positive change in the workplace.

The Exceptionals champions inclusive recruitment by providing practical guidance on the hiring process, sharing best practice, and linking businesses with leading rehabilitation organisations offering training, recruitment and ongoing support.

The Exceptionals campaign has now closed.

We now pass on the baton and encourage employers across the UK— in partnership with the third sector and the Government— to carry forward this vital work, building richer, fairer and more inclusive workplaces for all.
